Video repurposing

Goal: use AI to identify segments of a longer video that work well as standalone social-media clips, complete with suggested titles, descriptions, and timestamps.

Prerequisites

  • The video must be longer than 60 seconds. Shorter videos are too brief for meaningful clip extraction.
  • The video must have a subtitle file (.srt) uploaded or auto-generated via AI transcription. The AI analyzes the transcript text to find compelling segments.

How it works

When a video has subtitles and is longer than 60 seconds, a background queue job sends the transcript to an AI model. The model identifies 3–10 segments (typically 15–60 seconds each) that would work well as standalone clips for social media — emotional moments, key quotes, strong openings, and self-contained stories.

Each suggested clip includes:

  • Title: a short descriptive name for the clip.
  • Description: why this segment is compelling or how it could be used.
  • Start and end timestamps: the exact time range within the video.
Clip suggestions are generated automatically when subtitles are uploaded or paired. You can also trigger generation manually from the admin video page.

Viewing clip suggestions

Admin side

  1. Open the video from Videos → [Collection] → [video].
  2. Click the Re-purposing tab below the player.
  3. Each suggested clip shows a title, description, and timestamp range. Click any clip or its Watch button to jump to that point in the video.

Client side

Clients also see the repurposing tab on their video view, so they can review and use the suggested clips themselves. The experience is the same — click a clip to jump to its timestamp.

Regenerating suggestions

From the admin video detail page, open the Re-purposing tab and click Regenerate. This re-sends the transcript to the AI model and replaces the existing clip list. This is useful if:

  • You've updated the subtitles since the original analysis.
  • You want the AI to look for different types of segments.
  • The original suggestions weren't useful.

Short videos

Videos that are 60 seconds or shorter are automatically skipped — they're too brief for meaningful clip extraction. The tab will still appear but will show that the video is too short for repurposing analysis.

How clips are selected

The AI model analyzes the transcript for natural segment boundaries — topic shifts, pauses, emotional peaks, and self-contained narratives. It then selects the most compelling segments based on:

  • Self-contained stories: segments that make sense on their own without context.
  • Emotional moments: high-energy or heartfelt passages that grab attention.
  • Key quotes: memorable one-liners or takeaways.
  • Strong openings: segments that hook viewers in the first few seconds.
